Mah Jongg Cruise and Tournament Season Drives Bag and Travel Accessory Sales

Mah Jongg Cruise and Tournament Season Has Arrived: What to Pack for Your Next Game-Filled Trip

Scottsdale, United States – July 1, 2026 / The Charleston Club /

Mah Jongg cruise season is in full swing and fall tournament play is approaching. The Charleston Club, a Scottsdale-based designer Mah Jongg boutique, reports a summer-long surge in travel bag, padded tile case and accessory pouch sales as players prepare to play through their summer travel and into the fall league season. The boutique has expanded its bag inventory across eight cosmetic-style designs plus larger carrying bags and protective tile pouches.

Owner Dolores Parrish, who runs the boutique from Scottsdale and ships nationwide, says the seasonal pattern is unmistakable. Bag and travel-accessory orders climb sharply from May through September every year, with peak velocity in the four-week window before Labor Day. The pattern correlates with cruise sailings featuring on-board Mah Jongg play, tournament schedules at country clubs and regional leagues, and the fall recharter of local play groups across the country.

“Players in this category travel more than people realize,” Parrish said. “Mah Jongg cruises sell out a year in advance. Country club tournaments fill up by April. The women who play seriously are doing it on the road as often as they are doing it at home, and they need bags that protect 275-dollar tile sets through baggage handling and hotel transfers.”

The boutique’s top-selling travel bag is the 20-dollar cosmetic-style design, sold in eight colorways including Pink, Orange, Green, White and Multicolor. The bag was originally designed as an accessory pouch and has become a customer favorite for carrying tiles between weekly games and short trips. For longer travel, Parrish stocks structured carrying bags sized to hold complete tile sets with the racks fitted alongside, and padded protective pouches for individual rack sets and the annual National Mah Jongg League card.

The travel demand is part of a broader Mah Jongg surge that Yelp called out as a top 2026 trend. Searches for Mah Jongg clubs are up 4,467 percent year over year. Events are up 179 percent. The global market is projected to grow from 1.9 billion dollars in 2024 to 3 billion dollars by 2035. The American Mah Jongg Association reports women outnumber men in active membership by roughly 19 to 1, a concentration that has helped the cruise and tournament travel circuits build dedicated programming for the category.

“My customers tell me they used to pack the tiles in a zippered toiletry bag and hope for the best,” Parrish said. “Then they would arrive at the cruise and realize they were the only woman at the table without a proper bag. Once a player loses a single tile in transit, she upgrades. That is when she finds us.”

Parrish has used the season to expand the carrying-bag color range and to introduce padded inserts for players who travel with both designer tile sets and the lower-profile sets used in casual play. She has also seen growing demand for matching bags for the Mah Jongg cruise hostess gift category, where group organizers buy six or eight matching bags to gift to the women in their travel party at the start of the trip.

The fall league season begins for most local groups between Labor Day and the end of September. Parrish recommends that players who plan to travel with their sets between now and then order their travel bags in the next four weeks to allow time for stock selection and any backordered colorways.

The Charleston Club ships nationwide and to Canada. The full travel bag, tile case and accessory pouch catalog is available now at the boutique’s online store.
